ACOUSTIC FRANCE

Price: $15.00

Putumayo World Music brings the romance and charm of Paris and the French countryside with the release of Acoustic France.  This collection features contemporary chanson and acoustic pop by established stars and up-and-coming artists from today’s thriving French music scene.  Inspired by the classic styles of an earlier generation, young artists are borrowing from old-school lyric-driven composition, folk and Gypsy jazz to create an appealing modern sound.  The music captures the ambiance of strolling along the Seine or sipping wine in a Parisian café on a beautiful summer day.

Featured artists include Thomas Dutronc, the son of popular French singer Françoise Hardy and film star/singer Jacques Dutronc, whose sound was influenced by legendary Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt.  Sandrine Kiberlain, who released her critically acclaimed French debut album in 2005, first gained prominence as an award-winning actress in her native France. Carla Bruni, who recently made headlines for marrying French President Nicolas Sarkozy, started her career as a supermodel and actress but her musical talent has garnered her world-wide fame.

Several other exciting artists featured on Acoustic France have spent at least part of their lives outside of France and these influences radiate throughout the collection.  Constance Amiot was raised by French parents in West Africa and the Washington DC area before settling in France a few years ago. French in spirit, if not in direct origin, Pascal Lejeune, from New Brunswick, Canada, exhibits a gift for wordplay and creating melodies that sound like they’ve always existed and that have earned him comparisons to French legend Georges Brassens. Rupa & the April Fishes is a San Francisco-based group whose album eXtraOrdinary rendition was released in spring 2008 by Cumbancha, an artist label affiliated with Putumayo World Music. Lead singer and songwriter Rupa spent many of her formative years in southern France, where her mother still resides.

Included in the liner notes is a signature recipe from 3 star Michelin French chef Michel Troisgros of La Maison Troisgros.  Sifflets De Sole À La Banane Et Citron Vert (Banana and Lime Sole) is well-paired with the flavorful melodies served on this collection. All right.

AMERICAN BLUES

Price: $15.00

With American Blues, Putumayo continues its successful series of blues and blues- influenced albums that began in 1999 with Mali to Memphis: An African-American Odyssey.  American Blues is a collection of some of our favorite blues tracks by legends and rising stars that are helping to keep the blues alive and thriving.

The artists on this compilation have remained true to the roots of the blues, be those the acoustic guitar sounds of the Mississippi Delta, the urban electric drive of Chicago, or the swamp boogie of Louisiana. While they may have developed their own unique voices and approaches, they have made it their mission to respect the fundamental sound, structure and soul of the blues.

AMERICAN FOLK

Price: $15.00

"While the term 'new acoustic music' never took hold, numerous sub-genres ranging from singer-songwriter to progressive folk, urban folk and even anti-folk have coalesced under the umbrella of 'contemporary folk.'  Today, the expansive genre is at its creative peak, teeming with artists representing all roots and styles, the common denominator remaining a guitar and a few choice words to sing."

- Jim Bessman, excerpted from the liner notes of American Folk

Beginning in 1993, Putumayo released a series of celebrated folk music collections. With American Folk, Putumayo continues to highlight musicians who have written new songs inspired by folk traditions or have created new renditions of classic songs.

BRAZILIAN LOUNGE

Price: $15.00

It is impossible to deny the influence that Brazil has on today’s global culture. From music and film to fashion and dance, Brazil has become one of the world’s most important resources of popular art and entertainment. In appreciation of this extraordinary culture, Putumayo World Music will release Brazilian Lounge, a collection featuring the sultry voices and urban grooves of many of Brazil’s finest contemporary musicians.

Opening the album is a track by Paula Morelenbaum, who is known as one of the rising stars of Brazil’s “new Bossa” movement. With this and other tracks from her self-titled CD, Morelenbaum has reinvented herself using subtle electronica. Her pristine voice and graceful approach to song earned her a spot in Antonio Carlos Jobim’s band. She later embarked on a successful solo career and received a Sharp Award (Brazilian Grammy) as the “Best New Female Rock/Pop Artist.”

The fusions of samba, soul and funk by alternative Brazilian musician and producer BiD, combined with the vocals of international music and film star, Seu Jorge, make “E Depois”one of the stand-out tracks on the collection. Seu Jorge is best known for his gripping role as Knockout Ned in the film City of God. He also appeared in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, starring Bill Murray. It was from Murray that Jorge first heard a Putumayo release and he has since become a fan of the label.

It’s easy to see why Bebel Gilberto, with her exquisite voice and retro style, is one of the world’s most popular Brazilian artists. With over a million albums sold since her debut album was released in 2000, Gilberto is on the “most wanted” lists of the world’s leading electronic producers. On the remixed “August Day Song,” Gilberto compares a rainstorm to being in love.

The soulful sounds of Marcos Valle may have first experienced popularity in the 1960’s, but his voice and the bossa nova melodies he has written transcend any period. Having achieved fame in the 60s and 70s, Valle was rediscovered by British dance labels who remixed and re-released his earlier work to enthusiastic audiences. In the midst of this renaissance, Valle returned to the studio to record a number of contemporary albums. “Agua de Coco” comes from his album, Contrasts, recorded in 2003.

Stop everything!!! That’s what we did when we first heard the track “Há Dias” from newcomer Luca Mundaca. Putumayo was putting the final touches on this collection when we received an unsolicited, self-produced CD from Mundaca. We knew that there was something very special in the simple beauty of her voice and stopped the presses to make room for this sensual track.

Brazilian Lounge will take the listener to the contemporary bars and lounges of Rio and Sao Paulo, where a new generation of musicians is reinvigorating the classic sounds of samba and bossa nova. Tri-lingual liner notes include a recipe for a caipirinha cocktail, provided by Sagatiba, enabling you to quench your thirst Brazilian style.

CUBA

Price: $15.00

The music of Cuba developed from a unique set of historical and social circumstances. African slaves, brought to work on the Spanish sugar plantations, soon outnumbered the European colonists. The attitude of the Spanish political and religious institutions towards African culture, while undeniably oppressive, was more open than in some other colonial societies. Catholic priests did their best to convert the Africans to Christianity, but they overlooked their worship of African deities as long as they gave them Christian names. In fact, santeria, a religion that combines Catholicism with African deities and rituals, is still a key part of Cuban spiritual life.

Most of the songs on this collection are a style called son, (lit. "sound") one of the most popular and influential Cuban musical forms. Son developed around the turn of the century in Oriente, a region in eastern Cuba. Migrating musicians brought son west to Havana in the 1920s, where it exploded in popularity. The fundamental element of the son is a rhythmic pattern called clave (lit. "key"). Played on two wooden sticks, called claves, this repetitive beat is the foundation upon which all of the other musical elements are structured. It gives son the propulsive swing that has endeared it to people around the world. Most contemporary salsa is based on son.

INDIA

Price: $15.00

Putumayo World Music presents India, a CD collection showcasing India’s rich musical variety, from traditional and acoustic music to Bollywood and electronica. India’s emergence as a global economic power has brought increased awareness of this extraordinarily diverse country’s multicultural offerings, its music foremost among them.

India’s thriving popular music scene—an adjunct to the country’s immense Bollywood film industry—is highlighted on this collection. The love ballad “Tere Bina,” from the 2007 blockbuster Guru, was written by acclaimed film composer and Oscar winner A.R. Rahman, who took home the awards in the Best Score and Best Original Song categories for his work on Best Picture Slumdog Millionaire. The song also features Chinmayee, the award-winning female playback singer (an artist who records the songs that actors lip-synch). Rajeshwari Sachdev’s “Maavan Te Tiyan,” is another hit Bollywood song from the film The Perfect Husband. Guitarist Sanjay Divecha, a Mumbai native who performed Western pop music in Los Angeles before returning home in search of his roots, contributes “Naino Sey”. The song features vocalist Kailash Kher, one of the most popular singers in India today thanks to his extensive work in Bollywood and string of pop hits.

Several stellar musicians display their Indian classical music expertise. Satish Vyas, represented by his song “Homeward Journey,” is a renowned master of the santoor, or Indian hammered dulcimer. Deepak Ram (“Ganesha”) is a virtuoso of the bansuri (Indian flute), while Bombay Jayashri (“Zara Zara”) specializes in the Carnatic South Indian vocal tradition.

Taking Indian music in a new direction, evocative British/Indian singer-songwriter Susheela Raman blends her South Indian classical music training with Western jazz and acoustic folk influences in “Nagumomo.” Kiran Ahluwalia, a Canadian vocalist of Indian descent, offers a fresh take on India’s poetic ghazal (love song) tradition through the moving “Vo Kuch.” Kiran worked for Putumayo World Music for three years before pursuing a professional music career.

Finally, Uma Mohan’s ode to the Hindu god Shiva, “Shiva Panchakshara Stotram/Shiva Shadakshara Stotram,” exemplifies the spiritual aspect of Indian music that has appealed to Western musicians ever since the Beatles embraced the sitar and transcendental meditation. These days, Indian devotional music is used by millions of practitioners of yoga and meditation around the world.

ITALIAN CAFE

Price: $15.00

After the chaos and destruction of World War II and the conservative musical environment Italian leaders promoted, the Italian public was ready for a more relaxed sound. Jazz, swing and boogie-woogie were achieving worldwide popularity and, in Italy, merged with the Italian crooner tradition. The musical rebirth of the 1950s and ’60s was like a second liberation. What’s old is new and Putumayo’s June 21, 2005 release Italian Café captures the music and attitude from that era and from current singers whose musical DNA follows that lineage. The CD follows Putumayo’s successful French Café collection.

Many of the artists on Italian Café packed the nightclubs of the era and gained popularity through Italy’s newly inaugurated TV channels and burgeoning film industry. The image of the lovable hoodlum came to life in Fred Buscaglione. While most foreign music was banned under the Italian fascist regime, Buscaglione wound up in a U.S. internment camp, where he was able to get a jumpstart in trying out the styles emerging from America. True to his fast-living ways, he died at 40, crashing his pink Thunderbird into an oncoming truck early one morning in 1960.

Quartetto Cetra emerged in the late ’40s, when they provided the overdubs for the Italian versions of the movies "Dumbo" and "Wizard of Oz." The following decade found Renato Carosone blending Neapolitan folk music with American jazz and boogie-woogie to create a signature style that made him a household name in Italy and a chart-topping crooner in the U.S.

Nicola Arigliano, now in his 80s, is the only 1950s-era artist on Italian Café performing to this day. Born in 1923 in a small village in southern Italy, Arigliano ran away from home when he was just 11 years old to play music in the nightclubs of Milan. After experiencing great commercial success, Arigliano disappeared from the concert stage for 30 years. In the past decade, he has re-emerged with four new albums and a critic’s award at the glitzy San Remo Festival.

Two songs on the CD come from Giorgio Conte, who is not as well known as his brother, Paolo. As both songs demonstrate, however, the older brother has a jovial spirit that shines through in his lyrics. “Gnè Gnè” pokes fun at a very famous movie star lover of his who never says anything of meaning, only petty gossip and “gnè gnè.” “Cannelloni” teases another lover who is always on a diet and never can enjoy the pleasures of pasta.

Gianmaria Testa is more famous abroad than he is at home in Italy, where he works as a tran station manager. Testa performed his subtle and introspective songs for a local following near his native village of Cueno, not far from the French border, until a French producer helped him produce a critically acclaimed album in 1995. You can hear his trademark gruff, whispering voice on two songs on Italian Café; one about the superficiality of fame and one which compares the flight of hot-air balloons to human relationships.

The CD is rounded out by modern artists who are not retro in sound, but who cannot deny some heritage from their predecessors. Vinicio Capossela is like a Tom Waits of Italy, reminiscent of some unnamable era and with no hesitation in throwing in the sounds of toy pianos and chain saws. Newcomer Maria Pierantonia Giua makes her CD debut on this album. Meanwhile, Daniele Silvestri’s “Le Cose in Comune” (The Things We Have in Common) won Italy’s equivalent of the Grammy, as best song of the year. Over a jazzy bossa beat that echoes popular Italian music of days gone by, Silvestri sings of all of the 4,280 things he and his lover have in common.

Austrian band Quadro Nuevo perfected their instrumental versions of popular Italian songs of the ’50s and ’60s by performing on the streets of cities across Italy. The instrumental they present here—Renato Carosone’s classic song “Tu Vuo’ Fa’ L’americano” (You Want to Play the American)—was one of Italy’s first world wide hits.
